Are you a designer? Do you write texts? Or do you otherwise work on the realization of a publication? Then this overview might help you.
A new type foundry has entered the world! Bleifrei Type is the youngster's name based in Bern, Switzerland. Read on to learn about who we are and what we aim to do.
Let's think about text and break down its complexity. This essay assumes that text consists of three layers. Spoiler: The one that fascinates us most is the third, which is typography.
Again and again, designers or laymen speak of the neutral expression of typefaces. But can they really convey nothing, or do they merely wish for an indifference that doesn't exist?
Bleifrei Type is a Type Foundry based in Bern, Switzerland – created by Aaron, Florian, Matthieu and Rahel, four young graphic and type designers. Spirited and somewhat naive, we are inspired by unconventional ways of creating our typefaces and don't hesitate to question and challenge tradition. Our skills and interests couldn't be more diverse and our thirst for knowledge is far from over and we continuously learn from each other what leads us to such a colorful variety of typefaces. So check out what we've done so far and stay tuned for what’s yet to come!

Let's deal with some right issues. In general, we do not sell fonts, but only the right to use a font under certain conditions. A font licence specifies the rights and limitations of font usage for the customer. The agreement between the type foundry and the user is called EULA (End User Licence Agreement). The EULA is a contract and covers all aspects of permitted use, restrictions (e.g. modifications), liability and copyright.
The Licence Owner is either the designer, who is realizing a self-initiated project for themselves, or the company for whom a design project with our typeface is being created. A bit complicated, right? Here are two usage examples:- You are a designer or a design agency and you create your own project with our Fonts. -> You are the Licence Owner and you and your company size are relevant.- You’re designing a project for a client with our Fonts. -> The Licence Owner is the client and their company size is relevant. You as the designer are allowed to use the font for this project.
If you use the font only for print or only for digital applications, we offer you the corresponding licences. Apart from that, you can buy a combined licence, which allows you unlimited use. You can upgrade from the print or digital licence to the combined licence at any time.
No. You are not allowed to transfer a font that you have licenced for yourself to anybody else. However, you can buy a licence for your client so that they also have permission to use the font. Then you may charge the licence fees to your client.
This is pretty simple. Just click "Buy" on the page of your desired typeface and select the styles and options you want to licence. Then add the font(s) to the cart and follow the instructions of our shop.
We accept credit cards like Mastercard and Visa. If this is not an option for you, please contact us individually.

Yes. Once you have paid, you own the rights to our fonts forever.
The price is set by whether a font has a small or a large character set. Not all typefaces are developed to the same extent. For example, display fonts often require a smaller character set than text fonts, whose usability depends not least on the number of glyphs available. So it's basically a question of how much time we have invested in a typeface.
Yes, we do. Students benefit from a 100% discount. Yes, you read that right. Bleifrei Type gives its fonts free of charge to anyone currently pursuing an education. You can find out how to get them
.
Trial fonts are there to test a typeface down to the smallest detail. For each of our typefaces, we offer you a slimmed-down trial version for free download. So you can test if the font fits your project. As soon as you decide to use it, you have to buy a licence. Afterwards you will get the full version – the typeface in all its glory.
A variable font is an innovative and dynamic font format. Unlike static fonts, a single file contains a wide range of smoothly selectable styles. Because of this variety, we treat variable fonts like a font family in terms of price. Variable fonts are a powerful design tool that allows graphic designers a lot of flexibility.
All typefaces we sell are ordinary (but actually quite extraordinary) digital fonts that can be installed on your computer and used in any software. Just open the file and install it on your Mac or PC.
The latest font version is indicated at the bottom of each typeface page. We publish fonts as version 1.0 and improve and expand them over time. Whenever an update is released for a font you have already licenced, we will let you know. You'll get a free download.
When we speak of language support, we mean that a font contains all glyphs necessary to set a text accurately in a particular language. This often concerns diacritical marks and other special language-specific characters. For information on language support, please visit the detailed pages on our fonts.
That is quite likely. If you are missing an important glyph for your project, simply contact us. Depending on the case, we can help you out and add one or the other character to the font. However, character sets of a larger size are treated as custom fonts. We might be happy to do that too, depending on the project, but it will cost you according to the effort we put into it.
Absolutely. We love individual projects and would be happy to design a display or in-house typeface for you. If you are interested in working with us, please let us know. We'd like to meet for a coffee - whether by video conference or at our studio in Bern.
Please don't. It is actually forbidden to edit and re-export fonts. By agreeing to our EULA, you are contractually obligated to do so anyway. As a creative product, the copyright of our typefaces remains with us. If you do not like a detail of one of our fonts, please contact us. Maybe we can find an individual improvement.
Yes please! It's very easy. Share your project with us by sending an email to info@bleifreitype.ch, tag us on Instagram @bleifreitype or visit us in our studio in Bern. We look forward to seeing what you've done with our typefaces!
